Here we go with the video of the week section where I bring to you a great inspirational video found on internet throughout the work week, it could be a motion graphics or an animation, 2d or 3d, even a trailer or music video with some great design or animation techniques.

I try to bring a wide variety of outstanding shorts to your attention on this section, this impressive short “Alive in Joburg” a 2005 project where real video is mixed to some 3d effects to create a little documentary about aliens and how they are living on the earth since 1990. I know you may think this is a copy of the film District 9 but not, is the opposite.

The director of this short film, Neil Blomkamp is really talented as we can appreciate on this video and some others like Citroen C4, Nike or tembot, and thanks to the success of this mock documentary, he become the director of the film release on 2009 by Tri Start pictures, based on the same scenario and includin some actors from the short like Sharlto Copley.

Have you seen a god short animated film lately?

I already showed you other Blu animation that was made on Brazilian streets, well, this one is made by this talented and unique artist using the same graffiti technique but with the collaboration of David Ellis on the Fame festival on Italy, just one week for this beautiful result and this great mix of techniques and imaginary from two great artist of the motion world.

This time lapse video is a loop so the film can be played again and again seamlessly, you can watch the film below and enjoy of these artist doing what they do better.

This week I have one excellent video made in 3d talking about the crisis of subprimes, I know the subject is maybe a little old now, but the animation worth to be shown here as can explain to us, in a little spiral evolution, the process of owning a house from the first block until you loose it thanks to the bank.

The author is Mike Winkelmann, he’s a graphic designer and he also makes short films and music videos in his spare time and also his films have been screened at a few festivals and rejected at even more. He is also a member of the multimedia collective donebestdone, based in Milwaukee. He even performs live visuals for a variety of bands including NOBOT. As an animation student I really enjoy seeing awesome short animation films and now with Internet is really easy to find new thing all the time, but why French Short Animations?, because this is one of the most creative countries in animation, it has some of the best animation schools in Europe (les gobelins, supinfo) and it’s known by its animation festivals (Annecy, Strasbourg). The French touch its really appreciated all over the world for its creativity, interest on new techniques and also for the greats scenarios represented.

They’re a varied styles, some old some new, some computer some traditional, but all of them are really good, they are in not specific order, but all the animations here have a great quality, techniques and scenario skills,  and I am sure, you’ll be fan of french animation as me at the end of the post. Also  you will see which is my favorite, so just go ahead and look this great collection.

Oktapodi (Gobelins)

Trying to scape of a assistant chef, two octopus find them selves into a funny runaway for theirs lives. This great animation was nominated for the Oscars Academy Award on the category of short film (animated), almost at the same level of Presto from Pixar.

This is a strange story about our perception of time, it could be relative for each person or statics for others, but at the end we have so many issues with it, that it depends of us how we use it. This is an animation inspired by the universe of Myiazaki, was made as a final carrier project of a 2d animation school.

Blind spot (gobelins)

Another great animation from Gobelins as a third year project, this is the story of an unlucky thief get in to a market trying to make his job, but in the market an old and almost blind lady finish her purchase and go home. At the end everything could be confused, or really clear for the police.

Another beautiful animation from this school made as an opening short for the Annecy 2006 international animation festival. Is basically 2D traditional animation with some scenes made in 3D, the result its a great and clean animation with a funny story.

What could happen when the heavy weight champion wrestler Sigg Jones drinks a strange Power drink? he loses control of himself unleashing all the good he had… This is one of my favorites animations by the dynamic of the characters movements, this was made by three students from Supinfocom School in France, using 3DSmax.

A dream come true for a cleaning guy when he discovers a new spice of monsters who love him, he became what he’s always dreamed. A great mix between 3d animation and reality, and a good domain of the human body animation put in to a break dancer character, which is no to easy.

Montpelier bring to us another cool animation about a young little man who arrived in a prison where the strongest prisoner is the boss, and the other are his slaves, until the moment of the confrontation between the two principal characters, anything can happen in this prison, even you could became the most powerful guy on the place.

This week as the first of these series, I have a great video about a story everybody knows on earth i think, the fairytale Little Red Riding Hood, the idea of his creator  was to give a whole new style and interpretation to this great fairytale, and I think he made it, help also by a great music background.
